What can I do for the climate?
Each individual can make a contribution to fewer fossil fuels being burnt by saving energy and by attempting to increase their use of renewable energy.
[compare
Basic Course 2 "How Do I Act Sustainably?" and the examples there such as Sustainable
consumerism, Sustainable tourism etc. with the following]
|
Fewer flights
Aircraft exhaust is very damaging to the climate because it is emitted at a great height, where the reduction of greenhouse gases takes place very slowly.
Cars
If possible - and above all for short trips - go by bike or use public transport or go on foot.
Form a car pool
Drive in a style that saves petrol (at 160 km/h some 50% more petrol is consumed than at 120 km/h)
Run a car that saves on petrol (lower petrol consumption)
Electricity consumption
Always turn off electrical equipment (such as televisions), never leave them on stand-by
Use energy-saving bulbs
When buying new electrical equipment take special notice of energy efficiency (save on electricity consumption)
Use electricity from renewable energy (for instance, wind wheels, solar units)
Heating
Do not overheat rooms
Short ventilation periods (open the window fully for a few minutes) instead of having the window open ajar for long periods
Thermal insulation
Install as modern a heating system as possible
Install solar-powered hot water systems
Consumerism
Buy food from the local area (regional products). They do not need to be transported long (climate damaging) distances
Buy as little packaging as possible Packaging is a double burden to the climate: Through energy consumption during manufacture and emissions when burning waste
Use recycled paper whenever possible. This allows you to avoid forests being cut down for the manufacture of paper, which, when intact, absorb CO2.
