What is FIT@school?

Concept and aims

F
IT@school is a completely new IT-training concept that was designed to meet the specific requirements of teachers in South East Europe. With that course teachers don't learn how to use a single software, instead they learn how to fulfil teacher-specific tasks — as for example producing worksheets for their pupils, searching the Internet for information concerning one of their teaching-units, communicating with colleagues by e-mail etc. — using their computers (see article in the online magazine deScripto 4/2006).

In the course of the seminar the teachers will produce several worksheets for a teaching-unit about "Human Rights" - the example, we have chosen - and in doing so will aquire important skills concerning for example the use of Microsoft Word and the Internet. This concept is illustrated by the following tables, providing a complete picture of the FIT@school program and contents. In the first row below the heading of these tables you can see which worksheets and which kind of teaching material the participants of the seminar will produce; in the second row we have listed the most important skills that will be acquired.

Module 1 (38 slides)

Module 2 (35 slides)

Module 3 (46 slides)

worksheet 1: typing and formatting a definition of "human rights"

worksheet 2: questionnaire for the topic of human rights

worksheet 3: template for the evaluation of the questionnaire; template for a letter to parents

Word basics; file management

inserting tables, cliparts and graphics in Word documents; creating complex layouts; using Word together with other software

creating complex layouts with tables;

using Word styles and templates

Module 4 (41 slides)

Module 5 (53 slides)

Module 6 (31 slides)

worksheet 4:
declaration of human rights

worksheet 5:
list of annotated bookmarks (of important NGO's in the field of human rights)

final version of all worksheets with table of contents and common headers and footers

Browser basics;

downloading, saving and printing of Internet sources; inserting Internet sources into a Word document

websearch;

effective use of directories and search engines

effective use of e-mail;

advanced features (reviewing; headers and footers etc.) in Word

The basic idea behind this concept is that the teachers only learn what they really need, thus - on the basis of the concrete example we provide - will quickly understand that PC and Internet are real time-savers for them and can help them to dramatically improve the quality of their work and - as a consequence - will actually use it in their every day life at school.

Target group

The target group for FIT@school are teachers in South East Europe. As it is impossible for us to present and introduce FIT@school to individual schools and teachers in all the countries of the region, the target groups for our endeavours to disseminate the concept are teacher trainers.

For them we offer seminars, where we introduce the course, familiarize them with the new concept and show them how they can use the various materials (PowerPoint-presentations, exercises etc.), made available for them on the FIT@school CD-ROM. (see for example the program of a seminar which has taken place in Sofia in February 2006
: program, pdf, 44 kb).

With regard to the comprehensive contents of FIT@school and its new, innovative concept, it comes as no surprise that it's no easy task for the trainers to teach FIT@school by themselves. We therefore have prepared a bundle of data and documents, intended to support them and to facilitate this task as much as possible.

Contents

So, what do the prospective FIT@school trainers get from us? First and foremost a CD-ROM, containing seven PowerPoint-Presentations comprising almost 300 slides with screenshots, animations, graphics and videos as well as the full text for the presentation, which obviously facilitates teaching dramatically! To get an impression, have a look at the following screenshot, which shows a part of notes page 1 of module 1 in the Bulgarian version.

Presentations on the CD-ROM: Table of Contents

Module 0:

PC and Windows Basics (an optional module which can be used when working with absolute PC beginners)

33 slides with notes pages

Module 1:

Word basics; file management

38 slides with notes pages

Module 2:

Enhanced formatting; tables, cliparts and graphics in Word

35 slides with notes pages

Module 3:

Working with styles and document templates in Word

46 slides with notes pages

Module 4:

Internet and Browser Basics

41 slides with notes pages

Module 5:

Web Search

53 slides with notes pages

Module 6:

Communicating using e-mail and the internet; advanced features in Word

31 slides with notes pages

Beyond these presentations the CD-ROM contains

  • a short introduction to FIT@school

  • a tutorial for the trainers, explaining in detail how to prepare a FIT@school seminar for teachers and how to adapt the program for different target groups (absolute beginners, more advanced users etc.)

  • all the worksheets and documents the participants of a seminar have to create

Moreover, the trainers will get a special version of the FIT@school CD-ROM for the participants of their prospective seminars. Using this version the participants will be able to rework and deepen the material of the seminar.

The FIT@school CD-ROMs at present are available in Albanian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian and German language.

Experiences

The program has been introduced in Bosnia in September 2004, in Albania (2005), Bulgaria and Kosovo (2006) and was taken up very positively in all countries.

Dissemination

The dissemnination of the program in the various countries normally is organised as follows.

In the following, we have compiled some photos taken in Sarajevo (September 2004) and Prishtina (April 2006) respectively.
