"No. Rigoberta Menchú is certainly not the uneducated, simple women of
the people that some in the media have described with friendly condescension. Neither
is the Nobel Peace Prize laureate a "wild native", nor a
"flawless employer of non-violence" nor a feminist protagonist for the
rights of suppressed women.

She does not
fit in with the predetermined stereotypes perceived by whites. This
still fairly young woman has suffered so much personal and family pain
and suffering that she does not fit in with any of the liberation
dreams, be they third-world romantic or revolutionary. Yet those
searching for the reasons behind the life and struggle of Rigoberta Menchú
will surely develop a sense of respect, even profound regard for that
which is different about this "stranger" and for her commitment
against white Latin American racism."
