Truth and Reconciliation Commission:

Following the defeat of apartheid in 1990, South Africa found itself facing a new task: It was felt important to bring about conciliation between the different races in South Africa's "melting pot". The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) under the leadership of Desmond Tutu was tasked with leading the way in this process in 1995. The governing idea was that without forgiveness there could be no future. So an attempt was made to uncover the violence and human rights violations carried out during the apartheid regime by inviting victims and perpetrators to make statements before the Commission. Those making a full confession of their guilt and involvement in the horrors were guaranteed an amnesty. The TRC website encompasses the following:

bulletHearing of victims and perpetrators
bulletThe opinion of the ANC and National Party about apartheid and the TRC
bulletNewspaper articles and a detailed link list to related websites
bulletA conciliation register in which all South Africans can express their feelings about apartheid and their hopes for the future
bulletThe five-volume final report of the TRC, which was published in 1998 following two years of work and which contains a comprehensive preamble by Desmond Tutu.

This page features an article entitled "Desmond Tutu's Long Crusade". You can also access the BBC's archive on Tutu, apartheid and related subjects. The summaries of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee's final report are particularly interesting.
