Women's rights are human rights - rights that belong to women for the simple reason that they are human beings. At first sight, that appears to be completely logical. So why do we need a chapter on "Women's Rights" in its own right? Don't the national laws and established international human rights conventions apply to everyone, both men and women? Women's Rights as a detailed topic is broken down into three sections: Where?, What? and Why? You can find a graphical overview further down the page.

bulletIn the "WHERE?" section, a description will be given on the very long tradition of the unequal treatment of men and women. Modern civilisation makes no exception to this - the Declarations of Human Rights of 1776 and 1789, and the concept of a person as a mature political subject as formulated in the enlightenment excluded women systematically. Human rights only applied to men. Political and civil rights had to be fought for with a great deal of effort by women's organisations. As a consequence of the women's movement, ideas for a fundamental new design of the relationship between the sexes in both the private and public sphere were formed. Women and women's organisations who deserve credit for fighting for women's rights will be portrayed in this section. Today, women's organisations are active in every country in the world; their partners can be found in national and international committees. The tasks that the international women's movement is confronted with today will also be covered in this section.

bulletMany international institutions orient themselves mainly to men with regard to protecting human rights, even today. In the "What?" section, human rights will be portrayed from a viewpoint which caters to the special aspects of the female life context. What are referred to as Women's Rights require dedicated committees and specific international conventions to be set up. Documents and other material on this topic can be found in this section.
[> Go to "WHAT- What are Women's Rights?"].

bulletIn many countries of the world, it is assumed that the demand for equal treatment by women has no place in the context of human rights due to culturally and religiously motivated concepts. The women's position as a "second class citizen" is the feeding ground for discrimination and violence. The implementation of women's rights is still not complete, even in the United States, where the concept of equal opportunities for men and women is fixed in the constitution. Examples of women's rights violations can be found in the section on "WHY?".
